I never get excited about the quality of store-bought toothpaste. Like it just lacks something that I need after brushing my teeth – a clean, refreshing, soothing feeling.
Also it’s one more thing that I have to buy every month – spending time and my hard-earned money (things that a frugal person like me doesn’t enjoy doing). I prefer to not hand over my money to corporations that produce sub-par products, packaged in plastic and tested on animals. I do not want to buy “natural” toothpaste $20 per tube either.
What’s the solution? This homemade toothpaste is a natural alternative that gives amazing results – as I’ve never experienced with commercial toothpaste. Nice addition – it costs pennies to make and can be whipped up with basic ingredients in minutes.
How did I come to this? We have a reasonably sized bag of bentonite clay that my boyfriend got from a clay deposit for his construction experiments. I had heard of benefits that bentonite clay has for teeth, and I first tried brushing my teeth with just the clay.
It was an unusual experience brushing my teeth with powder, but I was pleasantly surprised by how clean my teeth felt afterwards – without any artificial aftertaste of commercial toothpaste.
Since then, I’ve developed this recipe of a proper toothpaste that is not only effective but also pleasant to use.
It has a soft texture, deep cleans your teeth and leaves a refreshing minty scent – made with natural ingredients that are so good for you. I never ever want to go back to ineffective and overpriced commercial toothpaste again!

Why you will love this toothpaste
Natural: Made with simple natural ingredients, it’s free of toxins, synthetic fragrances, and other questionable ingredients like in commercial toothpastes.
Quick to make: This toothpaste comes together in minutes, and a small container will last you for weeks if not months.
Refreshening: Peppermint essential oil gives it a clean, cooling scent – and it’s all natural.
Saves you money: A small container of this homemade toothpaste costs pennies to make and will last you many weeks.
Effective: This blend helps neutralise acid and fight bacteria – essential properties for healthy teeth and mouth.
Gentle on the teeth: Bentonite clay is ultra-fine and non-abrasive, and coconut oil adds a smooth and mild texture.
What’s inside?
Bentonite clay: Mineral-rich volcanic ash rich in minerals known for its antibacterial effect. Being alkaline in nature, it neutralises acid that leads to bacterial growth, helping prevent cavities and tooth decay. And it also absorbs toxins from the mouth.
Tip: Always choose food grade bentonite clay that doesn’t contain unsafe levels of lead or other heavy metals.
Baking soda: Just like bentonite clay, baking soda creates an unfriendly environment for bacteria that cause tooth decay.
Coconut oil: Traditionally used for oil pulling, coconut oil is believed to be beneficial for dental health. Even though further research is needed, there are studies suggesting that it may be effective in removing bacteria and fighting bad breath. And it feels soothing and smells so nice!
Peppermint essential oil: It has natural antibacterial and soothing properties, making it a perfect ingredient for homemade toothpaste. And needless to say – the natural fresh feeling and minty scent is so much more pleasant than of any commercial “freshening” toothpaste.
Ingredients for the homemade antibacterial toothpaste
This recipe yields about 50 ml of toothpaste – enough to last two adults roughly 2 months with daily use.
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 5 tablespoons food grade bentonite clay
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 25 drops peppermint essential oil

Equipment
- Measuring spoons
- Small bowl
- Small whisk
- 50 ml storage container
- Silicone spatula

Directions
- Add bentonite clay and baking soda into a small bowl.
- Pour over melted coconut oil.
- Add peppermint essential oil.
- Mix everything together with a whisk.
- Transfer the toothpaste into a storage container.

How to store
- Store this toothpaste in a small container (ideally stainless steel) in your bathroom.
- Depending on the temperature, coconut oil will be either melted or solidified, or somewhere in between – soft. It melts at 24°C, so if your house is quite warm, the toothpaste will be soft. If your house is chilly, the toothpaste will be solid – but it’s not a problem. Simply rub the toothbrush on the surface, and you will have enough toothpaste to brush your teeth. The oil will melt with the heat from your mouth anyways.
- With time the peppermint essential oil evaporates, and the toothpaste loses its flavour and refreshing properties. If you find that it has lost its minty scent, just add several drops of essential to the container and it will be good to go. Make sure the coconut oil is melted, so you might want to slightly heat the container to mix everything together again.
